Villa de Leyva, Colombia

Categories Bogota

A few weeks after my arrival to Bogota we took our first trip to Villa de Leyva to celebrate the New Year.

Here in Bogota it’s incredibly common for people to travel outside of the city whenever they get the chance. People often say that the best part about living in Bogota is actually the towns surrounding Bogota. (and I’m beginning to see why)

We went to Villa de Leyva with Rafa’s whole family to celebrate the new year. Here in Colombia it is very common to celebrate the new year with your family (quite different from how we celebrate in the United States).. a tradition that I found to be really nice.

It’s about 3 hours away from Bogota,  the only way to get there is by car or bus, but going on a road trip at Colombia turned out to be one of the best experiences. The mountains, the landscape, it was just so beautiful and breath-taking.

In the center of Villa de Leyva you find the enormous Plaza Principal, one of the largest squares in Colombia and all of South America. It is even more impressive if you consider Villa de Leyva’s rather small size with of 16,000 citizens.

Villa de Leyva is filled with so much nature and beauty. When visiting this beautiful town you feel like you’ve taken a step back in time…. but i’ll let the pictures speak for themself .

The countryside looks beautiful and lush over there and it all looks really pretty. I enjoyed reading your blog as I would like to travel more myself so I’m staying tuned to your blog. Thanks for your interesting article.

  3. Looks like a beautiful destination choice. Having spent 6 weeks in Bogota last year I can definitely agree to the statement that the small, warm surrounding towns are the best part of its location.
