Quebrada la Vieja – Bogota

a view of Bogota from the top of the hike
Back in January I was lucky enough to get to go to Montaña Quebrada La Vieja, an incredible hiking path in the mountains of Bogota. It’s a beautiful path strewn with tons of fresh air, greenery and waterfalls. There are no words to describe how beautiful this hike was.

As I mentioned before, Bogota sits at more than 8,000+ feet in elevation. (that’s a whole lot higher than what I’m used to). But the hike of this trail… leaves you at the top of this trail at 10,600 feet in elevation … yeah that’s pretty high…. But the height of this also lends itself to some absolutely breathtaking views of the city.

But also due to the height, it was a difficult and testing hike for me (especially since I am most definitely not much of a hiker). I found myself short of breath, and struggling a bit to make it all the way to the top. But I pushed myself to keep going, and I am oh so glad that I did because I was rewarded with one of the most breathtaking view of Bogota.

The start of the walk goes steadily upwards for about 45 minutes (although it felt wayyyyy longer) until you reach a plateau where you have 3 possible walking options. We took the left path which leads to the sculpture of the Virgin and then the cross on top the hill. Once there, you can go back the same way or take the path down to the main road. The walk is really magical with an amazing pine forest, tons of waterfalls and captivating views of the city and the surroundings.

This hike was definitely one of my favorite things that I have done in Bogota so far. The air felt so clean and pure. The nature was so beautiful. The amount of waterfalls I saw was breathtaking. It was a little slice of tranquility and paradise in Bogota.
