la Sagrada Familia

Categories Barcelona

Basílica de la Sagrada Familia is truly one of my favorite sights in Barcelona. I’ve been there four times already and it still never ceases to take my breath away…

I remember the first time I saw the Sagrada Familia…. from the outside I was completely blown away. I couldn’t stop looking, it was just so beautiful. There were so many intricacies, I just stood there staring and staring…I swear you could spend hours looking at it, and still feel like you haven’t seen it all.

It is truly a masterpiece, like nothing I have ever seen before. And still, it’s not even finished….

The outside is so beautiful and breathtaking you don’t think it can be any more beautiful… and then you step inside… and WOW

From the high ceilings to the colorful windows it’s just simply magical. As you walk through the inside of the basilica you here soft music playing through discreet speakers, it makes you feel as if you’ve been transported to this out of world place. The ceilings go up and up and up seemingly reaching up towards the sky.

Then there’s the windows, stained glass in every color you can imagine. When Antonio Gaudí designed Sagrada familia, he designed it right. The way the light flows through the glass, and the colors it brings with it.. it leaves you speechless (well at least for me it did).

Honestly, for me Sagrada Familia is a the top of my list of things to do and see in Barcelona. It’s like nothing else you’ve ever seen before, and the feeling it leaves you with… well, that’s a memory that will stay with you forever.

  1. Great photos. I went to Barcelona 2 yrs ago and visited La Sagrada Familia…felt exactly the same as you did. It’s impressive…no words can really explain. You just HAVE to see it.

    1. I couldn’t agree more! .. so many people say “yeah but it’s just another church” and I try my best to convince everyone i know to go.. it truly is one of a kind.

  2. There is a beautiful documentary on Antonio Gaudí that tells the tale of this church beautifully! I love that in Barcelona you walk over tiles designed by Gaudí a fact many people miss. What a place!

  3. Our family lived up the street in a wonderful house overlooking Barcelona (1961 to 1966). Fantastic photos… Must make a pilgrimage back someday. Cheers

  4. We spent a month in Barcelona in May of 2015 and I remember many happy hours of just roaming the streets to see what I could discover. Of course, that includes La Sagrada Familia which stands out in my memory as an awe-inspiring visit. Your post brings back some great memories! Anita

  5. Beautifully laid out blog, I’m just starting out a blogger novice. As we start our adventure in our campervan I hope mine will look as go as yours one day

    1. How long will you be there? Definitely go to sagrada familia & parc guell, take a tour around the gothic quarter. Go see the gaudi houses (although I don’t highly recommend going inside … the outside is the best part!) take a walk by the beach & if you’re there on a weekend don’t miss the magic fountains of montjuic. Go watch the sunset either from montjuic or the bunkers! Enjoy the beautiful city!

  6. Hello you. Love the article – have been to Barcelona one year ago – so nice city. Sagrada was also one of my highlights. Have a great day. Sabrina from sunglassessuggested.com

  9. Glad that you liked my posts on our trip to Italy in 2014. I’ve been writing and organizing them for a few days and posted them all this evening.

I much enjoyed your pictures of La Sagrada Famillia. We are thinking of traveling to Spain next year and staying in Barcelona and on the northeast coast. Any suggestions you may have would be very welcome.

  11. I was really happy to stumble on this post. Your photos are incredible! I’ve never been to Spain, but definitely look forward to visiting sometime soon!

  12. I just want to say that I totally agree with you. As an architect I can say it is one of a kind. There just isn’t any cathedral in the world like it. The fact alone that over 100 years it is still being built today says it is one of a kind. Where do you find such a place with so many hands having been placed on it creating and building it? Where do you find such detailed work today and walk inside and find another different world of beauty? No where. Thank you for sharing and I am happy we will be following each other. By the way, Barcelona is by far one of my favorite places to visit. So much culture.

  13. It is quite extraordinary, and I don’t know if you’ve seen what it will be like finished, relatively soon. It puts what’s been done till now in the shade, if you can imagine that’s possible! There is a central spire, of such girth and height that really takes your breath away.
It’s a remarkable achievement equal to those great cathedrals of the Middle Ages.

My personal like, are the brass doors full with words. Not sure if you remember them.
